The revised PSHE curriculum requires that children know “how to spend and save money sensibly” (key stage 1); “how to look after their money and realise that future wants and needs may be met through saving” (key stage 2); “how to become competent at managing personal money”(key stage 3); and “how to use a range of financial tools and services, including budgeting and saving, in managing personal money” (key stage 4).
The citizenship curriculum (key stages 3 and 4 to be statutory from September 2002) refers to personal finance in terms of “promoting other aspects of the curriculum” through “developing pupils’ understanding of the nature and role of money in society and developing skills in its use”.
