Roll Up! Roll Up!, Godolphin and Latymer School, The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, London W6
Just how did they all fit backstage? No sooner had a fieldful of bunnies hopped off stage than a barnful of mice teemed on. Meanwhile our heroes - a fractious bunch of escaped circus animals - adventured on in search of a good feed and somewhere to call home.
A feel-good musical with a nod to pantomime, the show boasted a bevy of bouncy songs and corny jokes, with a plotline that veered from Enid Blyton into a sort of big top Animal Farm.
Georgina Sutcliffe combined Master of Ceremonies Principal Boy and agent of revolution in a debonair cat lording it over a posse of sex kittens. She presided with a confidence and enjoyment that ran throughout the cast. The musical numbers were bold and clear, and Lucy Punch’s solo as a Thatcherite Pig was a showstopper.
The event was created and slickly staged by Mick Fitzmaurice and Andrew Peggie. The tireless Stacey Williams, a former pupil, costumed the throng, and designed a fantastic three-piece suite from hay for them to lounge on and nibble at.
The Lyric should be applauded for lending this team its Main House. Godolphin and Latymer School has the spirit (and the audience) to fill it.
