Catholic order apologises for sex abuse;In Brief

One of Ireland’s largest Catholic orders this week issued an unprecedented apology for years of sexual and other abuse inflicted in schools.

The Christian Brothers made the apology in half-page advertisements in Irish newspapers. The move follows a string of prosecutions against members of the Catholic order in recent years over sex offences, some committed decades ago.

A Christian Brothers spokesman said: “We are putting our hands up and saying this happened.”
