Nice to see breadth and balance are still a favoured theme of Professor John Howie (remember him?). The St Andrews University mathematician, who got a CBE rather than a knighthood for his great scheme of curriculum reform, has been appointed director of the yoonie’s music centre.

The part-time appointment means Howie will continue to teach maths in his last year before retirement. “Music has been a part of my life for a long time but it’s not a major career change,” he revealed this week.

The professor is also a church organist and choir director and currently president of the St Andrews Chorus. Pity that those who sing to his tune did not include Government ministers who insisted that Higher Still was written in a different key to the professor’s score.
