Zerocarboncity is a new website promoting the debate on climate change by exploring the energy challenges facing cities. According to the UN, half the world lives in cities but consumes three-quarters of the energy. The tone of the site is like a chatroom where issues can be debated freely.

The British Council’s science team believes more dialogue needs to be at city, rather than national, level. For example, London with 7.4 million people consumes more energy than Ireland and the same as Greece or Portugal.

The site will report on the top ten cities’ responses to climate change.

Solutions and good practice can be communicated and shared between schools.

The site will feature a climate prediction computer simulation where variables such as energy and water consumption can be changed to see whether they result in a warmer or cooler climate.
