Your job and career questions answered.

I am thinking of switching from secondary to primary. How do I go about it?

In theory, you just apply for a job. Your qualified teacher status is not restricted to a particular subject or sector. However, it is not that simple.

Although there are good reasons why teachers want to change from one sector to another, such moves can be treated with suspicion by governing bodies.

With falling rolls and lots of teachers trained for the primary sector still looking for permanent posts, you will have to explain why the school should favour you. Work in areas such as primary-secondary transfer or training that reflects your interest in switching to primary will help. But think hard about how you are going to sell yourself in a competitive marketplace.
