To the Catholic Headteachers’ Association of Scotland (CHAS) conference where it was a case of That Man Again. And Peter did not deny a Christian gathering.

Peacock’s presence before the heidies reinforced the mantra that there will be no ditching of denominational education while he and brother Jack are in charge.

With the Irish connections at CHAS as strong as ever, it was left to Finbar Moynihan, head of Holyrood Secondary in Glasgow, to introduce the minister of the political variety. Peacock spied his opening: “I am pleased to meet someone who actually occupies a Holyrood building.”

Talk about walking on water.
