(Photograph) - “Quite often if I go to a book shop, I will end up in the children’s section,” says Louise Blakemore (above), 29, who teaches Year 6 at Gordon county junior school in Strood, Medway.

Checking out new children’s books as part of the job to her. She tries to read to her class every week, picking illustrated fiction such as Beauty and the Beast by Geraldine McCaughrean.

“In a lot of schools it is hard to justify reading to children without doing an activity afterwards because you are on this treadmill of giving them experiences,” she says. “But I think anyone worth their salt will try to read children a story once a week.”

At home she picks popular novels and travel books. “I am reading The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets by Eva Rice,” she says. “I’ve just read Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngazi Adichie, from the Richard and Judy book club, which I did not like much.” Photograph:Teri Pengilley
