Additional training places announced

sos1: Did I hear right? On BBC Scottish news tonight Jackie Bird stated that there would be an additional 300 places for teacher training, because the numbers claiming benefits had decreased! What about all of the people who are unable to claim benefits as they are on supply lists and looking for work?

This beggars belief - after retraining, five years of trying to exist in this system, doing supply, short term, long term, 100 applications, living away from home for over a year, a dozen interviews, two contracts and now reduced pay, I am longing to get a job out of teaching. I can’t stand any more of this farce. What a waste of time, self-esteem and a killer on career.

Shame on you SNP.

serendipity: If it’s true, it’s hard to take in the monumental stupidity of whoever made the decision! It’s a real slap in the face for all those supply teachers who are unable to secure work and downright cruelty to those who take up the additional places in the mistaken belief that they’re needed! Politicians make me sick.

kibosh: Teachers employed in local authority schools - 51,286; teachers aged 50 and over in primary - 34 per cent; teachers aged 50 and over in secondary - 37 per cent. Am I correct in thinking these statistics are pretty meaningless?

Surely we need to know the percentages of teachers over the age of 58 (or thereabouts) in primary and in secondary? I keep thinking of the folks who are still waiting for a half-decent retirement package, and in a few cases, not being “allowed” to retire yet (because they would need to be replaced), although they are desperate to get out and have really had enough.

sbf: The only fools are the ones who go onto the training courses with the expectation that there will be a job at the end of it.

poor tom: Agree. I can’t claim benefit, don’t have a decent job. I keep applying. However, I DON’T think there are currently too many teachers - just too few posts for us to fill. Instead of paying for 300 more student teachers in training, let’s use that money to put (some) teachers into work for the benefit of our children.

segbog: I do support the SNP as well, but can they please stop mucking about with education - let’s employ more teachers in the classroom on real wages. Simple enough methinks.
