End of Year Reports

Posted by carol75

We are being asked by HT to write our end of year reports under A Curriculum for Excellence terminology. We have a box each for successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. Does anyone else have to do this? What can you write under these headings?

Madness! Your parents won’t have a clue! Has this been agreed council policy? Given that ACfE is barely off the ground and hardly anyone has a clue what it’s about, I think your heidie is aff herhis heid.

As far as I know it isn’t council policy - only us and one other school are doing it as a pilot.

I honestly don’t know what to write. What about the children who are not confident, don’t contribute, have learning disabilities, etc? Leave the box empty?

Firstly, the four capacities are not meant to be seen in isolation, but rather as a whole. Your HT must really think heshe is well on the way to fully embracing ACfE. Either that, or heshe is trying to gain some brownie points. How can you write a report in CfE style when some of the DRAFT outcomes are just emerging?

What about: Successful learners - curricular knowledge, strengthsweaknesses and so on

Effective contributors - how much do they appreciate and to what extent are they involved in their own learning? What do they bring to the classroom? Are they outspoken? Quiet? A good laugh? Need a good kick up the arse?

Responsible - how seriously do they take their learning? Are they responsible and reliable? Do they help out in class? Are they lazy? Organisational abilities? Initiative?

Confident individuals - confidence, I suppose.

Tell your heidie to take a hike until either ... your local authority requests your school to pilot, and therefore provides appropriate support and guidance, or national guidelines are produced.

CfE annoys me ... the outcomes are by no means discrete and there is so much overlap it’s tough to see where one ends and another begins. Good idea in principle, but too open and arty farty for anyone to make sense of it.
