A lucky New York thief has stolen a laptop belonging to Chris Waterman, chief executive of the education directors’ association, Confed. Waterman, in America for the Council of Chief State School Officers, was upset to find the computer missing from his Manhattan hotel.

But he cheered up when he went to file a report with police at the 24th precinct. While waiting he was joined by drug-dealers caught in a bust by undercover cops.

“It was pure theatre, much more exciting than a Broadway show,” he reports, breathlessly. “I couldn’t tell who were the criminals and who were the police. I felt like a bit-player in NYPD Blue!” Expect to see Confed-inspired episodes of Law Order and CSI later this year.
