No doubt the next few weeks will bring the usual debate over exam “standards” and fingers will be pointed in various directions. Perhaps the debate will be informed by an exchange between a mother and her child I overheard in a supermarket.

Child (about seven years of age): “Mummy, please can I have a writing book and pen?”

Mother: “No! That’s your problem - too much reading and writing. That’s all you do, bloody read and write.

“It’s not even school time and you still want to bloody write.”
