Almost one in five teenagers studying for GCSEs have lost sleep in the past month because of worries about schoolwork and exams, a TES survey has found, writes Helen Ward.
Of 500 parents polled in Wales and England, a fifth said their child had lost sleep. For younger children the main reason was nightmares, followed by worrying about Sats and bullying.
The survey found children with a television in their room slept for an average 30 minutes less than those without. Almost 70 per cent, including 40 per cent of under-eights, have one. Some parents considered the BBC soap EastEnders unsuitable.
Nine per cent of state schools and 18 per cent of independents already recommend bedtimes , and 40 per cent of parents wanted their school to do this.
