As the snowy conditions that swept Britain at the start of February melt in the memory, the Diary feels it would be a shame not to share with readers an eye-watering anecdote from a head in Teesside who arrived at her school amid snow storms to find a huge snowman in her playground. We call the creature a “snowman” advisedly because he had a very prominent extra limb to prove it.

The snowman was allowed to survive but only as a creature of more indeterminate gender. A shovel-wielding caretaker made a clean break with the past. Ouch!
