Francesca Leiper, a 16-year-old student at St George’s School for Girls in Edinburgh, has won a prestigious Chinese-speaking competition in London.

The teaching of Mandarin begins in P4 at St George’s. Francesca, who hopes to study Chinese at university, won the Advanced Individual Speaking prize for her three-minute speech on Chinese culture and food, at the Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition, run by the British Council and supported by the HSBC Global Education Programme.

Her prize is a week’s all expenses-paid tour of Beijing in April, together with the winners from the other categories.
