The British Council is providing two new opportunities for schools to build links with China.

Grants of up to pound;750, supported by the HSBC Global Education Programme, will go to schools and further education colleges which are arranging events or activities to help students learn more about China or the Mandarin Chinese language. They must show how the students will pass their knowledge on to other members of the community. The deadline is December 7 for the first round, or March 10 for the second round.

A competition, also supported by the HSBC Global Education Programme, is open to UK primary schools and special schools which have an existing partnership with a school in China. The theme is “Comparing Traditional Stories, Myths and Legends”.

The competition encourages schools to build on work with partner schools through research and production of a performance in English by the UK school of a traditional Chinese story, myth or legend. The winning school in each of three categories will receive pound;3,000 to support work with its Chinese partner school. The deadline for registration is January 8.
