Ministers have assured the churches that they will not be required to pay a share of the costs involved in building new classrooms as a result of the plans to restrict infant classes to 30.

The cost of expanding popular Anglican and Catholic primary schools will be met by central grant, though the churches will continue to pay their 15 per cent contribution for other building costs.
