The democratic right to protest and express dissent is one of the fundamental human rights that should be studied in citizenship. Pupils could be presented with some sample slogans on protest banners from two contrasting recent marches, that of the Liberty and Livelihood protesters and of the protesters against a possible war with Iraq. Having analysed the slogans for their meaning, pupils could be asked to speculate on what kind of people might have carried these banners on a march. They could be given copies of the photographs from which these slogans were originally taken, with the slogans blanked out and invited to match the people to the missing slogans.
