Everyone agrees that when citizenship appears in the timetable, pupils should see it’s about “us” rather than “them”. Co-operative Insurance (CIS) has produced Citizenship Matters, a pack of four attractive work cards and a teacher’s resource card to help promote co-operative thinking. The cards use a variety of fictional items reflecting real-world issues such as redundancy and the ethical aspects of pollution. Secondary students are encouraged to look behind the presentation of controversies in the media to the principles underlying them. They can win pound;2,500 by describing a voluntary project that has engaged their civic commitment. The closing date for the competition is March 30. Copies of Citizenship Matters can be ordered from Carolyn Hicks at CIS on 0161 837 4912 or downloaded from www.cis.co.ukschools-incitizenshipcurriculum Tom Deveson
