The 800th anniversary of Perth has led to a special programme of classroom activities for thousands of schoolchildren.
These will include a “Junior Ryder Cup” at Gleneagles, and competitions spanning heraldry, invention and poetry. Pupils will be asked to help fill a time capsule, which has been gifted by the Royal Air Force Association, while a medieval-themed event at Perth Racecourse will show the changes that have taken place over eight centuries.
The celebrations, dubbed Perth 800, will also see young talent from a number of schools staging a production of the Musical Silkroad at Perth Concert Hall in March, the result of two years’ work with Chinese composer Kimho Ip.
Lifelong learning convener Liz Grant said: “Perth 800 isn’t just about the headline events we have lined up; it’s about educating our young people and encouraging them to be proud of their communities and where they come from.”
The year-long celebration marks the anniversary of the granting of the Royal Burgh Charter to Perth, by King William I of Scotland - William the Lion - in 1210.
