I am training to be a citizenship teacher. How easily will I find a post when I qualify? In both the schools where I have been on teaching practice, citizenship has been taught by the humanities teachers who have had professional development, but have no qualification in the subject.

Did you do your research on job opportunities for teachers of citizenship before you started your course? Or were you seduced by the Government’s advertising campaign telling everyone that they need people to train as teachers? You will probably find a teaching job, but possibly not in citizenship. Between last September and the end of February this year, less than 30 posts for citizenship teachers have appeared in The TES compared with more than 250 in history and geography. The main recruiting season is about to start, so expect around 150 posts to be advertised during the school year. It is time to talk seriously about your job prospects with your course leader and the careers service.
