Individuals seeking school lets for activities with young people in Renfrewshire will have to provide two references, the council’s education committee decided this week. Clubs and organisations which want to use schools will also have to provide details of their own vetting procedures.

Brian Oldrey, convener of the education committee, said: “We are also looking at identification systems in schools. In a number of schools staff wear ID badges with their photographs on them. At Merksworth High in Paisley, children wear ties to identify themselves as pupils.”

North Ayrshire is spending Pounds 120,000 on tightening school security, the education committee heard on Tuesday.
