The DfES, like most government departments, commissions huge amounts of academic research which, in the past, was published whenever it was ready.

But now it is published all at the same time, once a month. Why? A ministerial source tells the Diary that Charles“Two Pizzas” Clarke has noticed that most research is negative (“We’re paying a bloody fortune for people to slag us off”).

He has been extolling the benefit of burying all this negative publicity in a single release to ministers in other departments. A fine advocate for our university sector!
