Education Secretary Charles Clarke, winner of the Beard Liberation Front’s prestigious “Beard of the Year” award for 2002, failed to retain his title at an award ceremony in January. Former Cabinet minister Robin Cook, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and left-wing polemicist Michael Moore shared the 2003 honour.
Keith Flett, spokesman for the front (see letters, page 26), said: “Clarke did not figure because his beard appears to be dropping out.”
