THE Scottish Socialist Party would recruit thousands of extra teachers to bring down class sizes to a maximum of 20 and open talks with the unions to increase teachers’ pay.

The party, led by Tommy Sheridan, a Glasgow councillor, wants a veto over school closures on financial grounds, nursery places for all pre-school children and schools open all year round and in the evenings for community use.

Like the SNP and Liberal Democrats, it backs a national education forum to shape the future of Scottish education.

Similarly the manifesto wants to see the abolition of tuition fees in higher education and argues for the restoration of grants to 1979 levels “as a first step to ending student poverty”.

Students should be allowed to live free in publicly rented accommodation, including halls.
