The latest official figures show that class sizes are continuing to rise towards the 5-14 maximum of 33. The number of primary pupils in classes of 31 or more has risen from just over 75,000 in 1991 to nearly 80,000 in 1995.
Ronnie Smith, general secretary of the Educational Institute of Scotland, said jobs were being axed “at a time when Scottish primary and secondary schools are going through a period of major change”.
