Ronnie Smith, general secretary of the Educational Institute of Scotland, said jobs were being axed "at a time when Scottish primary and secondary schools are going through a period of major change".
The latest official figures show that class sizes are continuing to rise towards the 5-14 maximum of 33. The number of primary pupils in classes of 31 or more has risen from just over 75,000 in 1991 to nearly 80,000 in 1995.
