Classes axed

I add my voice to those protesting at what appears to be the destruction of adult learning. In my area, classes such as book binding, photography, flower arranging, cookery and candlemaking (the one I promised myself I’d attend when I retired) have already disappeared - unless one is studying for a qualification.

I understand that nationally the Workers’ Educational Association is not in a good way, and now places such as Birkbeck College have been told by the Government to stop funding those studying for a second degree. Many of these students are part-time and, it is implied, should not be studying for leisure reasons. Over the years, I have attended various classes. All have been enjoyable and enriched my life.
