A comprehensive school in Oxford has struck a blow for the state sector - in the classics. A group of three sixth-formers at Cheney School won prizes for Latin reading while competing against students from five independent schools in the city.
The top prize in the competition staged at St Anne’s College was won by Kate Ashby, 16, for a reading from Virgil’s Aeneid. Her twin Helen came third and Rosemary Garfitt, 16, was second.
