Classics is indeed a dying subject. Teacher education institutions have been told to stop recruiting unless there is a specific need from a council or independent school. Meanwhile the dearth of home economics teachers means that the subject has been pushed up the priority list. Others in the top category apart from English and maths are Gaelic, technological education, French, German and physics.
