Classics was among the first courses to be filled at summer schools

The move follows the extensive hype surrounding Troy, the $200 million blockbuster released today, starring Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom.

Peter Dunn of the academy, said the interest in classics was not due purely to fans' eagerness to gain a deeper appreciation of the actor's art.

"At the bottom of other subjects, you find the classical world," he said.

"Gifted children want to know what underpins our culture. They want to understand how subjects work."
