Clean sheet for Santa

The imminent season of goodwill has begun in Edinburgh with a query from an anxious primary.

After last year's furore over videoing nativity plays, the head is taking no chances and has asked the city council for advice on who exactly has to be referred to Disclosure Scotland for a criminal record check.

The head is naturally concerned that men with large white beards and red cloaks who only appear in and around schools in mid-December may fall foul of recent legislation.

But even the world-famous gent is to be subject to a proper check. Very safe practice for a man who hands out presents to unsuspecting children.

The city is not expecting to be inundated with further requests. "After all, there's only one Santa Claus," one official remarked.
