The TES, along with FILMCLUB and Save the Children UK, is hosting a debate discussing how to close the gap in educational achievement between children from different economic and social backgrounds.

The gap in educational achievement between children from different economic and social backgrounds has remained stubbornly constant in the UK.Save the Children UK, FILMCLUB and the Times Educational Supplement (TES) are committed to addressing child poverty and reducing this inequality in attainment.

For the TES, inequality is both a topical and a structural issue in education; for Save the Children UK, breaking the link between disadvantage and educational achievement is a vital part of ending child poverty; and FILMCLUB is seeing early indications that its work is helping address these important issues in ways that could offer a blueprint for future approaches.

Closing the Gap - a day-long eventhighlighting ways in which the achievement gap can be narrowed - is taking place at BAFTA, 195 Piccadilly, London on 9th November 2010.Speakers including Lord Bichard, Professor Mel Ainscow, Beeban Kidron and Alan Parker - as well as teachers and students - will discuss key areas such as:What can be done to close the achievement gap? How can the arts and culture play their part? Why is the UK bottom of the table for child well-being and happiness? How can we improve the life-chances of young people?

The day will also include a lunch, and an exclusive preview screening of the award winning feature filmMonsters, and a Qamp;A session with the film’s British director, Gareth Edwards.
