Closures fear

Western Isles and Argyll and Bute councils are the latest to embark on a review of their building stock, which could lead to widespread school closures.

Western Isles councillors will meet in a private seminar on September 24 to decide how many schools comply with their existing criteria for rationalisation.

Argyll's education committee has already approved such an exercise and officials have been asked to target schools which are less than 40 per cent full, where the roll is very small, whose buildings require large sums of capital investment, and where an alternative school is within reasonable travelling distance.
