SOME may doubt whether Tim Brighouse is really semi-retired - after all, new jobs for the former Birmingham education chief include London’s schools “tsar” and visiting professor at the Institute of Education.

But the Diary has proof that Professor Brighouse is adopting a pensioner’s lifestyle: he is playing golf. In fact, we hear he hacks his way through the rough at North Oxford golf course every Friday.

So religious is his devotion to the game that he now refers to himself as “MDF Wapet”, an obscure reference to Henry James’s reaction to a golf bore at a party: “My dear fellow, what a princely expenditure of time.” Those puzzled by the connection between name and quote should look at the initial letter of each word.
