ESCAPING from volcanic eruptions was traumatic enough for children from the Caribbean island of Montserrat. But former Montserrat headteacher Dr Gertrude Shotte says that pupils who moved to England faced further problems at school because of teachers’ low expectations of black children, while those who went to other countries excelled. “The only time they met racism before they came to England was seeing the word in a dictionary,” she said.
