While Tam Dalyell campaigns to protect the funding of Catholic schools against the threat from a Scottish parliament, protagonists of independent Catholic schools in Italy are seeking parity of funding with the state sector.

No chance, is the pessimistic ecclesiastical view of the leftist government’s intentions. The newspaper of the Church in Tuscany says that equality has been given “a doccia scozzese” (Scottish shower). Has this colourful expression been borne home by the hordes of Italian summer students remembering the generosity of their Scottish families with the hot water?
