Further education colleges and adult literacy tutors should beware. ICS, the self-styled “world’s number one in home learning”, has been blitzing homes in Glasgow with its glossy home-learning brochure featuring 200 flexible courses.

Disregarding the fact that Glasgow is in Scotland, ICS lists GCSE and A-level courses galore. But the prize has to go to the advert for the pound;30.20 per month adult literacy course whose advert starts with the classic: “If you want to be better at reading and writing, you’re not alone - a lot of people feel the same way.”

Perhaps ICS needs to go on one of its own marketing courses to work out that reading the adult literacy blurb automatically disqualifies potential applicants.

Verily, it’s the month of lifelong learning.
