Committee vows to get skills back on track

A MAJOR inquiry into the national skills strategy will be carried out by MPs next month to coincide with publication of the White Paper.

Barry Sheerman, chairman of the Commons education and skills select committee, told FE Focus they would “take the entire paper to pieces and scrutinise the whole skills dimension.”

He admitted to being concerned over the direction the skills debate was taking and said there was a need to keep ministers on their mettle.

“The skills debate has always seemed to be all over the place. We want to look at it in the round and call the necessary people to account for proposals,” he said.

“The national skills strategy White Paper will have green edges and we will exert our influence as we did with HE.”
