Community spirit makes a difference

I read with interest about the diploma debate in the UK and moves toward community service. At the International School Dhaka, success is not just linked to a 96 per cent pass rate in the International Baccalaureate diploma.

In our school, community service and international understanding are part of the curriculum and the pupils naturally pull together to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Understanding global issues and that we can all make a difference, however small, is important. An outcome is that International Schools stand up and are counted, especially at times of disasters.

Last year cyclone Sidr devastated parts of Bangladesh. The students, parents and staff responded magnificently, and clothing and blankets were sent to the south. I believe there is hope for the future when caring young people will respond so readily to the plight of others.

So I applaud any moves in the UK education system to rebuild community spirit and to include in the curriculum opportunities for creativity, action, service and a wider international understanding.
