How has the world changed since Hillary and Tenzing’s epic climb in 1953? The Young Geographer of the Year competition asks pupils to write a magazine article entitled “Everest: yesterday’s exploration, today’s package holiday, tomorrow’sI?” Open to 5-18-year-olds in UK schools, the competition is judged in three categories: under 12 (word limit 500); 13-15 (word limit 800) and 16-18 (word limit 1,500). The competition is run by Geographical Magazine and sponsored by The TES. The closing date is March 30 and winners will receive books and resources from Collins and Ordnance Survey. Full details and teaching materials are on the Royal Geographical Society website: www.rgs.orgeducation
