Web-design competitions are all the rage. IT’s Our School on the Internet, which started as a local initiative for Belfast schools, is now going nationwide. The brainchild of Paul Hanna of the British Computer Society, it was set up two years ago to promote the use of IT among pupils and teachers. Schools have to produce a collection of web-pages, such as a guide for new pupils or information to support project work. Regional winners and runners-up will be picked at primary and secondary level and a national winner will be chosen from these. Prizes range from PCs to software and video equipment. Entry forms are available on 0171 580 6677.

The internet service provider ATamp;T is promotoing its Web design competition as an international event. Schools as far apart at Malaysia, Canada and Britain are invited to get together in teams of three for The Virtual Classroom project. Sites will be judged on content, presentation and level of collaboration. Primary and secondary schools will be judged separately. Trophies, modems and software await the winning teams, with an awards ceremony in Hong Kong. Details are available at www.ap.att.comvc.
