Your correspondent Fred Naylor (TES, January 31) points out that 83 per cent of grammar school pupils achieved at least five A* to B grades at GCSE, and 23 per cent of pupils at comprehensives did so. This must be about the fraction of pupils who go to grammars in selective systems - so by this measure the comprehensives are doing at least as well as the grammars. How many of the comprehensives are in fact “creamed” by local grammars. Well done comprehensives for doing well by your most able pupils.
