* Celebrating history is the theme of the Historical Association’s annual conference at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology from September 12 to 14. Contributors include Michael Gorman, history and geography adviser, Wiltshire; Christine Counsell, history education lecturer, Cambridge University; and Jamie Byrom, history adviser, Devon. Workshops will focus on history’s role in raising achievement and developing literacy, and on using information technology. Fee: Pounds 130 per day. * The Historical Association’s third Teaching history 14-19 conference will be held on November 14 at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge. Update and methodology sessions include the Russian Revolution; European Reformation; 19th-century Britain; early modern Britain; raising achievement at GCSE; and using information technology. * The Imperial War Museum is marking the 80th anniversary of the Armistice with a programme of events including a conference on November 13 entitled ‘The First World War: the aftermath’ for sixth-form and college groups. It will focus on the war’s social and political impact on Britain and the implications of the war and the Treaty of Versailles for Italy and Germany, including the rise of fascism in both countries. Speakers include Professor Donald Sassoon, Queen Mary and Westfield College, London; and Peter Simkins, Imperial War Museum historian. Documentary archive film will be shown. * Want to plan a battlefield tour for key stage 3 and GCSE students? The Imperial War Museum is running a workshop for secondary teachers on October 6, looking at practical arrangements, how to interpret the site and cemeteries and how to use museum archives and galleries either for a preliminary visit or follow-up work. * National training provider, Stands for Education, is running a course entitled ‘How to implement target setting in the history classroom simply, efficiently and effectively’ in Leeds (November 4), London (November 12), Birmingham (November 24) and London (December 3).
