The Historical Association’s centenary secondary conference will be held at the Empire and Commonwealth Museum, Bristol, March 4. Key speaker will be Christine Counsell, editor of Teaching History, and workshops include: film in the history classroom; chronology and coherence: a course for key stage 3. The annual meeting and conference will be at Nottingham University, April 7-9. Seminars include Alf Wilkinson, Historical Association training manager, on “Putting the story back into history: writing for KS3”.

Professional development weekends offered by the Historical Association include: exciting history using ICT, Lincoln, March 25-26; assessment for learning in history, Huntingdon, April 22-23; teaching history you believe in, Bristol, May 13-14; teaching about the Holocaust, Imperial War Museum North, Salford Quays, Manchester, June 10-11. Fee per course: pound;270; pound;230 members. An AS-level Tudor and Stuart day for sixth-formers at the Tower of London on June 21 will include a keynote speech on “Richard I - an unjustified reputation?” and a choice of workshops. “The past is always present”, an East Midlands regional professional development day, will be held at Masson Mills, Matlock, March 31. Key speaker: Julian Richards, archaeologist, broadcaster and writer of Meet the Ancestors -Blood of the Vikings. Plus secondary workshops on digital video, history and literacy and Qualifications and Curriculum Authority assessment in history materials.
