The Mathematical Association’s annual conference on the theme Visualising Mathematics will be held at St Martin’s College, Lancaster, April 8-11. The Association of Teachers of Mathematics is celebrating its 50th anniversary at its Easter conference. Entitled A Spatial Odyssey, it is being held at Chester College, April 9-12. Key speakers: David Fielker, himself a member for 40 years, who will discuss shape, space and pace, and Heinrich Bauersfled on a visiting Martian’s report on terrestrial troubles with maths education. Sessions include: learning from children’s mistakes, maths from cyberspace, QCA update, graphic calculators, and the ATM through a Lithuanian spyglass. The next British Congress of Mathematics Education, BCME-5: Removing Boundaries, will be held at Keele University, July 5-7. the aim is to capitalise on the enthusiasm for maths engendered by Maths Year 2000. The London Institute of Education is holding mathematical sciences research seminars on January 24 and March 14, 5-6.30pm in Room 677, 20 Bedford Square, London WC1. At the first, Multivariate Multilevel Analysis of Examination Results, Min Yang, Harvey Goldstein and William Brown will analyse AAS level results in the maths papers of 52,587 students from 2,592 institutions in England in 1997. The second, Maintaining Test Standards from Year to Year: how is it done? will be led by Chris Whetton, assistant director, National Foundation for Educational Research. All welcome.
