Stands for Education is running a course for key stage 3-5 teachers called "How to raise standards of Writing in drama and effectively bridge the literacy gap". Taking place in Manchester (November 25), Birmingham (December 5) and London (December 13), areas covered will include: creative approaches to recording drama experiences and strategies to support less able students. Teachers, parents and nursery workers will discover new ways to engage children in creative play at West Yorkshire Playhouse Arts Extra workshops being held one Saturday morning a month until July 5. Activities include: street dance, mask-making, football fun and the internet. Attendance at least seven sessions can give accreditation from the Leeds University degree in playwork. The Bigfoot Theatre Company runs at least 100 workshops a week in London schools. These include Environmental, exploring green issues through drama, singing and dance, and KS2 PSHE and Theatre Arts courses on such topics as racism, bullying and personal confidence building. These start at pound;1200 plus VAT for six sessions. Out of School Clubs are available for KS1 KS4 children, where activities include drama, dance, singing, mask, circus skills and video workshops. Prices start at pound;800 plus VAT for 10 one-hour sessions. All courses will be offered nationwide from 2003. Other initiatives include the development of training programmes on using drama in the classroom, a teacher supply agency specialising in performing arts and theatre-in-education touring productions. The Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama's annual conference will be held in Leicester, August 14-17. Sessions will include: historical movement for the stage; using the mask; the history of puppetry; Leicester Haymarket: an integrated theatre (innovation in education); open-air Shakespeare at Tolethorpe Hall; Kabuki Theatre; Alexander Technique for actors; demonstration by Treasure House of Make-Up; and a tour of the first mobile theatre, the Blue Box.
