Its Conference of the True Millennium will be held in Grey College, Durham University, July 25-28, 2001. Lectures include: Sir Arnold Wolfendale on 1000 Years of Astronomy: where next?, Professor David Knight on 1000 Years of Science, and Revd Dr Gavin Wakefield on 1000 Years of Christianity. Discussion groups will include: medieval monks, the Roman woman, the Venerable Bede and Suleyman the Magnificent. Outings will be organised. The London Institute of Education is running a course called HERODOT: using the web to teach geography at 20 Bedford Way, WC1, June 30. Between now and October, young people from up to 500 schools and colleges will be gathering data for Coastline 2000, a major survey of the state of the coastline, including estuaries up to the tidal limit. As well as encouraging environmental concern, this Geographical Association initiative promotes fieldwork and geographical skills such as mapping and observation. Interim results will be presented during Geography Action Week, October 9-14. Devotion in the Indian Tradition is the theme of a conference organised by the Dharam Hinduja Institute of Indic Research at the Divinity School, St John’s Street, Cambridge, July 7-8. Topics include: a Southall Ramlila in the context of the Ramayana tradition, Indian devotional music, the role of devotion in Theravadin meditation, temple priests in Southern Indian Vaisnavism, and a different approach to Jina image worship.
