The Geographical Association has developed a series of regional full-day professional development units. Courses include primary geography and ICT; getting started with geographical information systems; and using interactive whiteboards in primary geography. They can be linked with the London Institute of EducationEdexcel distance learning professional diploma in learning and teaching (www.ioe.ac.ukpdlt). Fee per course: from pound;200 (GA members).

Explore 2004, an annual expedition and fieldwork planning seminar organised by the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers, will be held on November 20-21 at 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7. Experts will be on hand to help with medical matters, insurance, logistics, communication, mapping and project management in rainforest, polar, marine, desert and mountain regions. Interactive roadshows called ICT in Schools: Embedding ICT @ Secondary have been organised by the DfES in partnership with the subject associations, Key Stage 3 National Strategy and Becta. The geography event will be held at the RGS, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7, November 24.

The Geographical Association International Committee is organising an 18-day study tour of China in late Julyearly August next year. It will visit Beijing, Xian, Xining, Lanzhou and other cities, looking at regional disparities, ethnic diversity, heritage tourism, desert landforms and farming. Approximate cost pound;2,000.
