OCR is introducing its new GCSE science qualifications through a series of free regional teachers’ courses: Bristol, September 23; Leeds, September 26; East Midlands, September 30; London, October 3 and 10; Sutton Coldfield, October 7; Manchester, October 14; Exeter, October 17.

Topics include: changes to GCSE science from 2006; 21st century science suite; a revised entry level science will also be available.

QCA will be sending five copies of its new guidance booklet to all schools, to support the implementation of the new GCSEs, together with programme of study booklets. Downloads will also be available from the website. QCA, in collaboration with Ofsted, Secondary National Strategy, and NAIGS (the National Advisers and Inspectors Group for Science), has organised three conferences for LEAs in the autumn term to discuss the implementation of the 2006 changes to key stage 4 science: Manchester - October 6; London October 7 and 10.

“People, science and society” is the theme of the 2006 British Association Festival of Science at Norwich Research Park until tomorrow (September 10).

Frances Cairncross, rector of Exeter College, Oxford University, and former management editor of The Economist, will give a presidential address on what social science can do for the sciences in general.
