* Professor Tim Brighouse, chief education officer for Birmingham, is one of the key speakers at The power of language, an International Federation for the Teaching of English conference at Warwick University, Coventry, July 7-10. Organised by the National Association for the Teaching of English, themes include: literacies; technologies and rhetorics; language; mother tongues; new Englishes; making meaning and getting it across; and the diets and structures of learning. * The National Association for the Teaching of English is kicking off the millennium on January 28-30 with a conference at Swanwick Conference Centre, Alfreton, Derbyshire. It is entitled Under starter’s orders: managing the new English curriculum and themes will include: managing the first year in teaching; working with classroom assistants; and teamwork or target setting. * The British Library is running 90-minute sixth form student seminars by prior arrangement on Thursdays and Fridays until July 16. Themes available are: changing language; critical appreciation of 20th-century literature; the Romantics; and the development of manuscripts.
